The Natural Change Project

Wild Places as Transformative Space

In 2008, WWF-Scotland commissioned me to design a programme working with high-profile leaders to embed sustainability narratives across their peer groups and sectors.

The Natural Change Project brought seven leaders from different fields into the Scottish Highlands for a series of residential workshops in wild places - not as a setting, but as the primary agent of change.

The results were striking. Participants underwent lasting personal transformation that translated into active environmental advocacy at senior levels across sectors. The programme’s success led to it being repeated with senior education leaders in 2011.

The approach directly influenced Scottish government education policy and contributed to UNESCO recognising Scotland as a world leader in Learning for Sustainability in 2015.

The success of the programme led to it being established as an independent social enterprise and charitable foundation in 2011, going on to reach over 150 participants.
